I created several Media Art works focusing on network communication over the Internet. I am interested in Group Communication System such as Wikis, Creature-like behavior, and automatic music composition. I created systems by intergrating various technologies like Web application, physical simulation, and robot user interface.

Work Experience

Researcher, Fluid Information Design Group, Information Technology Research Institute, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), September 2002 - current

qwikWeb

I created a group communication system that integrates mailing list and WikiWikiWeb. Users can create a wiki site and a maling list at the same time. All the messages sent to the mailing list are stored as newly created wiki pages.

Modulobe

We designed a sytem for constructing virtual creatures by connecting creature modules and specidy the movement of the body. You can share the model you created on Modulobe Model Gallery site.

Lecturer, Department of Inter Media Art, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music, April 2002 - current

Network Communication Design

A Class for art works connected with the others by the Internet.

Lecturer, Information Design Department, Tama Art University, April 2001 - March 2002

Interactive Art Programming

A Class for creating interactive art works using Ruby scripting language.

Researcher, International Media Research Foundation (IMRF), June 1997 - August 2002

A Hands-on Model of the Internet

We created a physical representation of how the Internet works. You can create a network packet by placing 16 black and white balls and send it to the Net. This is a permanent showpiece of National museum of emerging science and innovation (Miraikan).

SoundCreatures

I created a sound communication system. You can send your own musical phrases or musical commands to sound robots. They move around in the venue with playing their own sound. The sound robots also communicate each other.

Education

MS Media and Governance, Keio University, Kanagawa Japan 1997

Concentration: Network Art, at Masaki Fujihata Lab.

WebHopper

I created a geographical visualization system of web traffic. The system watched the ethernet trafic of the Net, and translates the destination IP address to geological location in realtime.

BS Environmental Information, Keio University, Kanagawa Japan 1995

Concentration: Media Art, at Masaki Fujihata Lab.

PeepHole

I created a web camera system that can control the angle of the camera.

Art works (Selected)

qwikWeb: Integrating Mailing List and WikiWikiWeb for Group Communication

  • Proceedings of the 2005 International Symposium on Wikis (WikiSym 2005), 2005.

Publications

Papers (Selected)

  • qwikWeb: Integrating Mailing List and WikiWikiWeb for Group Communication, in the Proceedings of the 2005 International Symposium on Wikis (WikiSym 2005), 2005.

Magazine Articles (Selected)

  • Translations of "Programming Media" by Casey Reas, InterCommunication No.27, NTT Publishing, 2003.
  • Next generation of Music through exchanging sounds, "How music works" (AERA MOOK), Asahi Shimbun, 2001
  • About music creation using network as a material, and the relation between social and music structures.

Honors

sensorium, Grand Prix, Golden Nica, Prix Ars Electronica 1997

sensorium, Semi Grand Prix in the Expresssion Division, Prix of Technology, Application, and Expression about Java, 1997

SoundCreatures, Honorary Mention, Prix Ars Electronica 1998

Modulobe, WISS 2005 Best Demo Award, 13th Workshop on Interactive Systems and Software, 2005

Farm photo acquision system by WWW, Best Paper, Japanese Society of High Technology in Agriculture, 1998

Professional Affiliations

  • Judge, Engineering Design Competition of Architectural Institute of Japan
  • Symposium Committee, International Symposium on Wikis
  • Editorial Committee, Journal of Information Processing Society of Japan
  • Various Program Committee on Computer Human Interface symposium.

Other achievements

Free Software

Ruby/CHISE

The system extends a character as a bundle of features, not code point. You can use almost 80,000 chracters as an object and control a chracter by various methods.

Ruby/sgl

An easy-to-use graphical programming library for creating simple graphical art works. The library also can handle audio data, font data and physical simulation.
